Job Purpose

Manging the development of BPP University’s Pro Bono Centre

BPP Pro Bono Centre designs and delivers projects that enable students and learners to develop new skills and gain new experiences, while giving back to the local community.  Each year, the Pro Bono Centre enables hundreds of BPP students and learners to benefit from pro bono and volunteering opportunities that support both personal and professional development, while making a difference to people in need across the country.    

Please note, this is a hybrid role with two days a week in Birmingham, one day from home and will require some occasional travel to other BPP centres and some evening work when required.


What you’ll be doing


·       Expanding BPP’s partnerships with external charities and community groups providing opportunities for students. 

·       Developing knowledge of all the Pro Bono Centre’s projects but will focus supervising cases in the Consumer Law Advice Clinic and attend the clinic sessions (including some evening advice sessions).  

·       Working closely with other members of the Team to ensure that your responsible pro bono projects run effectively.  

·       Assisting with design, co-ordinate and implement scalable pro bono initiatives that encourage social mobility and widening participation. 

·       Working with BPP’s international students to progress a strategy to engage them in Pro Bono and Volunteering whilst they are studying. 

·       Working with Student Directors appointed to assist in the running the projects.  

·       Liaising with and recruit volunteers to assist with supervision on our projects.  

·       Promoting the Pro Bono Centre to student and learner volunteers, including at programme inductions across the business, at Virtual Open Evenings and at BPP events. 

·       To promote the clinic to potential clients and/or referral agencies. 

·       To recruit and train student volunteers from among BPP law students.  

·       To maximise the clinical and/or public legal education and employability value of the students' work.  

·       To promote the culture and ethic of pro bono among the students.  

·       To liaise with and recruit the volunteer supervisors from among BPP lecturers and externally.  

·       To attend conferences and committee meetings to exchange ideas within the pro bono community. 

·       To line manage and supervise other members of the team, as and when required.

• Be a qualified solicitor or barrister with experience of civil/commercial litigation and hold a current practice certificate.
• Have experience of pro bono projects within the legal profession
• Experience of designing and delivering training and/or presentations to large and small groups
• Knowledge of explaining legal principles clearly and simply both orally and in writing
• Have experience of managing teams or projects
• Be flexible and willing to travel in the UK.
• An ability to be resilient, working on own initiative & under pressure to meet deadlines
• Ability to build respectful relationships with a range of senior leaders and external stakeholders.
• Excellent communication and networking skills, that enable you to gain trust and establish credibility with learners, staff, and clients at all levels.
• Excellent organisation, problem solving and time management skills, with an ability to engage a broad and diverse range of stakeholder groups.
• Ability to research and convey complex information to a variety of audiences in a variety of formats (e.g., presentations, reports, data analysis).
